Hey! Mike Becker here. Welcome to NGK TechConnect, your go-to resource for automotive product diagnostics and repair information. In this segment we’re going to be covering the unique properties and attributes of NGK’s Ruthenium HX Spark Plugs.
So, what exactly is ruthenium? Well, it’s a rare earth metal – atomic number 44 on the periodic table. But more importantly, it’s the next level of spark plug material above platinum and iridium. What is it that makes these Ruthenium HX Spark Plugs so special? Well, there’s two things. The ruthenium alloy and the spark plugs tip design. The ruthenium alloy is the key to these plugs’ increased durability which provides us the best service life for all engine types. Under the intense conditions of the modern engine, ruthenium’s resistance to oxidation and peeling outperforms both iridium and platinum spark plugs.
But beyond just the metal type, Ruthenium HX utilizes the two most advanced high ignitability tip designs that are offered today. DFE, or double fine electrode, is for those naturally aspirated engines, while PSPE, or projected square platinum electrode, is going to be used on those turbo and supercharged applications. These two high ignitability designs significantly reduce the absorption of the flame front that’s going on inside of our cylinder, making them a much more efficient design than your conventional spark plug. Ruthenium HX provides us the most complete combustion event and the longest service life.
